As residents of Northern Indiana and Southwest Michigan, we are somewhat accustomed to and expect daily changes in our weather, but this year Mother Nature has definitely been playing tricks on us. While the weather has been unbelievably spring-like, the sounds in my household are not the birds chirping, but rather a chorus of, “Let’s go! Are we there yet? What time does it start?”
You see, in this amazing part of the country, looking for something to do as a family or a couple is so easy, you could pretty much fill your calendar every weekend with things to do. The challenge will be finding enough weekends to enjoy all the area has to offer.
In Southwest Michigan, make sure you check out the Wine & Art Festival at the Silver Beach Hotel in St. Joe, April 21st and May 26th, or the Senior PGA Championship, making its first appearance in Michigan at The Golf Club at Harbor Shores, May 22-27th. Also, it’s certainly no secret that Michigan is home to picturesque beaches and award-winning wineries. Continuing to attract over 4,000 wine and sun lovers each year, the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail is proud to once again pair these two favorite natural attractions at the 7th Annual Lake Michigan Shore Wine Festival on Saturday, June 16th.
In Northern Indiana, The European Market in downtown Chesterton will kick off the season on Saturday, May 5th and will run every Saturday through October. If you have never visited the market, it is a wonderful way to spend a Saturday. In Valparaiso, make sure to experience Eat Up Wine Down, held the first Thursday of every month. Participating restaurants offer $5 food and drink specials, and I am sure if you stop into one of the numerous retailers downtown, it won’t be hard to find the perfect Mother’s or Father’s Day gifts.
In Michigan City, take a stroll and enjoy the Uptown ART Walk on the First Friday of every month. Located in the north end of Michigan City’s Historic District, the Uptown Arts District is an area filled with great galleries, boutiques, restaurants and businesses where local artists showcase their work.
Looking for something to do in Lake County? Make sure to check out Bellaboo’s Play and Discovery Center, take in a Railcats baseball game or enjoy all the wild slides at Deep River Water Park, which opens the Friday before Memorial Day.
In St. Joe county, taking in dinner and a show at the Morris Performing Arts Center is a wonderful way to spend an evening, or if you want to make a whole day of it start out by visiting the wonderful stores at Heritage Square in Granger.
We hope we have inspired you with a sampling of exciting things to do over the next couple of months. And there’s so much more out there, some of which you will see in this edition of INCity or on our web site, www.incitymag.com.
Happy Mother’s Day and Father’s Day to all of the wonderful moms and dads out there!
Best regards,
Jim & Lauren Ford
